Description
Introduction Housing adaptations installed using public monies are usually funded through a local authority housing department finance system. Occupational therapists working with these adaptations have traditionally done so from a base in social care (Department of Communities and Local Government [DCLG] 2006, section 5.8). The Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996 assumes that this is the case when requiring the housing authority to consult the welfare authority over the necessity and appropriateness of adaptations. Although occupational therapists are not specified as the recommending officers for the welfare authority, in practice they are generally seen as the professionals with the most relevant skills and knowledge to fulfil this duty and are thus central to most publicly funded adaptations. (Picking and Pain 2003, DCLG 2006).
